The Church One, Holy, Catholic & Apostolic

One: “The Church is one because of her source.”

  • God the Father, Son and Holy Spirit are one and have established the Church
  • The Trinity is the mystery of the One and the source for the Church
  • The Father is the one who founded the Church, and…
  • Jesus is the Body – one and the diverse Church is the many
  • The Holy Spirit dwells in each belonging to the Church and unifies us to God.
  • Jesus founded the Church in Peter’s confession if Jesus being son of God. (Matthew 16:18), “And I tell you, you are Peter and on this rock I will build my Church…”
  • Jesus is the Groom and the Church is his Bride.
  • One, by definition, invites unity. However, there are wounds which serve to divide the Church – the wounds are sin.
  • All who are baptized belong to the Church – we are human and sin but we are bound to obey to maintain unity. We are all called to be saints.
  • This unity also encompasses the diversity of the world.

Holy – The Church is Holy because God is Holy and established the Church

  • “The Church… Is held, as a matter of faith, to be unfailing holy. This is because Christ, the Son of God, who with the Father and the Spirit is hailed as ‘along holy’, loved the Church as his Bride, giving himself up for her so as to sanctify her; he joined her to himself as his body and endowed her with the gift of the Holy Spirit for the glory of God.” (CCC 823)
  • Ephansians 5: 23-24, “As Christ is head of the Church, his body, and is himself its Savior. As the Churchis subject to Christ…”
  • We, as baptized members of the Church are holy and called to holiness through our faith and following the precepts of the Church.
  • Some of the holy “saints” are canonized to be seen as examples for the rest of the church in their actions and faith.
  • But, we are all called to holiness and to be saints.
  • “By canonizing some of the faithful, ie., by solemnly proclaiming that they practiced heroic virtue and lived in fidelity to God’s grace, the Church recognizes the power of the Spirit of holiness with her and sustains the hope of believers by proposing the saints to them as models and intercessions.” (CCC 828)

Catholic – The Church is Catholic which means universal = related to the whole. God willed.

  • The Church is Catholic because she was sent out by Christ on a mission to the whole human race. (CCC 831)
  • The Church is also Catholic because Christ is present in her.
  • “The Church is universal by vocation and mission, but when she puts down her roots in a variety of cultural, social, and human terrains, she takes on different external expressions and appearances in each part of the world.” (Paul VI – CCC 835)
  • There are concentric circles of membership to the Church which includes all who profess a faith – Catholic, Christians, Jews, Muslims and non-Christian religions – all are called to Christ through the Church

Apostolic – The church is apostolic because the Church was established upon Peter – the rest of the Aposotles were asked to go out and baptize. She (the church) was established three ways:

  • She was and remains built on the “foundation of the Apostles” – these were witnesses to Christ – God on earth –who sent them on a mission. Matthew 28:19, “Go there therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and of the Holy Spirit teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you; and behold, I am with you always to the close of the age.”
  • With the help of the Holy Spirit the Church keeps and passes on the teaching which have been heard from the Apostles. Timothy 1:13, “Follow the pattern of the sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus

“Guard the truth that has been entrusted to you by the Holy Spirit who dwells in you.”

  • These Apostolic teachings have been passed down through the priests in union with the successor of Peter
  • “You are the eternal Shepard who never leaves his flock untended. Through the apostles you watch over us and protect us always. You made them shepherds of the flock to share in the work of your Son…” (Roman Missal, Preface of the Apostles I)
